Torres Small Votes For War Powers Resolution

Representative Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) issued the following statement after voting in favor of a Concurrent Resolution re-affirming Congress’s Constitutional role in authorizing prolonged military conflict and requiring any President to consult with Congress about military engagement with Iran moving forward:

“The events of the last week have highlighted the weight of Congress’ responsibility to the American people and responsibility to my constituents like few others. I continue to appreciate the President’s public statements outlining a potential for continued de-escalation with Iran. Today’s bipartisan vote sets us on a course for Constitutionally required collaboration between the President and Congress, so we can face continued tensions with Iran. The consequences of a prolonged military conflict are a responsibility we must bear together.”

H.Con.Res. 83 would not prevent our military from acting in America’s self-defense, but would require Congressional approval for further proactive and prolonged military action against Iran. The resolution would also not impact other counter-terror activities in the Middle East that were authorized through the 2001 or 2002 Authorization of Use of Military Force.
