New Mexico State Police Capture Colorado Murder Suspect following Pursuit

Española, NM - The New Mexico State Police received information from the Longmont Police Department in Longmont, Colorado that wanted murder suspect, Richard Martinez (33) of Longmont, CO was in the Española area Thursday.

Martinez is a suspect in a homicide that occurred in Longmont, Colorado on June 3rd, 2020. Martinez was reported to be driving a 2019 Maroon Dodge Caravan, and possibly headed to Mexico.

On Friday, June 5, 2020, New Mexico State Police officers located the 2019 Maroon Dodge Caravan traveling north on U.S. Highway 285 in Española.  Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the caravan. The vehicle fled and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit traveled down State Road 74 and Rio Arriba County Road 56A.

The pursuit continued for about 25 miles and ended when a New Mexico State Police officer performed a pursuit intervention technique on U.S. Highway 285 at around milepost 209.  Martinez jumped from the vehicle and then led officers on a foot pursuit. 

After a short foot pursuit, officers were able to safely take Martinez into custody Friday.  Martinez was booked into the Rio Arriba County Detention Center where he will be extradited to Colorado.  Espanola Police Department assisted during the pursuit.
