New Mexico Republican Says State Should Join "Texas Rollback of Roe v. Wade"

Commentary: Senator David Gallegos (District 41-Eddy and Lea) today applauded the new Texas law that went into effect following the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to take up last-minute challenges from Texas abortion providers.

“Congratulations to my fellow pro-life legislators who stood up for the future of their state and delivered a law that protects unborn children from the crime against humanity that is abortion,” said Senator Gallegos. “It is a great day when Roe is rolled back.”

The law prohibits a medical provider from performing an abortion when a heartbeat can be detected by an ultrasound. It provides for a private cause of action in civil court against abortion providers performing the procedure after a heartbeat is detected. The law also provided the basis for a Heartbeat Model Act passed by the National Association of Christian Lawmakers (NACL) during its July policy meeting. The model is available to state legislators to consider in their respective statehouses.

“As New Mexico State Chairman of the NACL, I am proud that the NACL put forward this important piece of pro-life legislation that will protect children across the nation,” added Senator Gallegos. “I just pray that one day New Mexico’s legislators will also value life.”
