New Mexico And Texas Representatives Ask Trump For Immigration Reform

Commentary: 15 NM House Democrats, along with Representatives from the Texas House of Representatives, sent a letter to White House officials that reaffirms their commitment to immigration reform. On Monday, August 20th, state Representatives received a letter from the White House asking legislators across the country to support President Trump’s anti-immigrant sentiments. While these Representatives agree that law enforcement officers should be recognized for their public service, they quickly became aware of the anti-immigration attitudes within the letter, and came together to craft a response.

“Unfortunately, if you read the contents of the letter from the White House, this was only a thinly veiled attempt to support the terrible immigration policies the President has put in place and to continue the incorrect message that immigrants and violent crimes are linked. The real threat to the safety of our communities is this dangerous rhetoric and the targeted efforts by this administration on immigrants and their families,” said Rep. Bill McCamley (D-Mesilla Park).

House Democrats understand that immigration is critically important to our economy, and believe that immigration has contributed to the character of our state. House Democrats will continue to fight for immigration reform.
