Commentary: With the Presidential election and transition, we can and do let slip from our minds what else happened in this past election.
The people of CD2 have lost one of the most effective and outstanding Representatives in this election, 2020. Xochitl Torres Small was our voice in Congress. She worked so hard–more than any other Representative, Republican or Democrat–for us on the Hill. She listened to all her constituents. She knows the issues and problems we have here in Southern New Mexico. Her work on health care and rural hospitals, rural broadband, agriculture–and yes, the energy industry–may never be equaled, just to name a few. She always has been there when we asked.
She traveled to all parts of DC2, the biggest district that isn’t a whole state, listening to whoever wanted to talk to her. Because of that she made the most unprecedented, extraordinary effort to bring all sides to the table in search of common ground.
You don’t satisfy everyone that way but it’s the only way Congress works in these times. No other Representative has done that for us. She will be missed, and we will be watching in the next 2 years to see what comes next.
