Drag-Racing Suspected In Las Cruces Crash That Injured Post Office Worker

A U.S. Postal Service employee was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon and two teenage boys are facing charges after they crashed their pickups into a mail truck.

The teenage boys, both 17 and driving Ford F250 pickup trucks, are suspected of drag-racing on Engler Road shortly after noon today. Traffic investigators believe the boys were both headed eastbound on Engler where they both ran a stop sign at Jornada Road.

The 51-year-old Postal Service employee was driving northbound on Jornada in a white LLV, a Long Life Vehicle, and was passing through the intersection. The LLV was struck first on its left-rear by the tan F250. The LLV began to spin counterclockwise before it was struck on its right-front, driver’s side, by the green F250.

The teen driver of the green F250 fled the scene and was later located at Onate High School. The tan F250, after colliding with the LLV, struck a rock wall and was disabled. The teen driver of the tan F250 and his passenger were not injured.

The female driver of the LLV was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Citations against the teenage boys are pending completion of the investigation.
