Commentary: The Albuquerque City Council will vote on the proposed paid time off ordinance Monday, Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. If the bill passes as written, hard-working people who live in Albuquerque will no longer have to choose between their paycheck and caring for themselves or a loved one when they are sick.
The proposed ordinance would allow employees who work at least 56 hours in a year for an employer located within the city of Albuquerque to accrue one hour of paid time off for every 32 hours they work. Employees would be able carry over unused paid time off to the next year, up to 56 hours.
The law would go into effect on January 1, 2021 and phase in over the next two years.
The first year, the law wouldn’t apply to businesses with fewer than 10 employees. Starting January 1, 2022, the law would apply to businesses with three or more employees.
The law was introduced by Albuquerque City Councilors Lan Sena and Pat Davis.
