Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills In Context: Appropriation in Photography and Film

Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills In Context: Appropriation in Photography and Film
In conjunction with the UAM's exhibition Warhol & Friends Maggie Dethloff, Assistant Curator of Photography and New Media at the Cantor Arts Center, will speak on Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills, looking backwards and forwards in time to contextualize Sherman’s breakout series within histories of appropriation in photography and film. Drawing connections between Sherman’s work and Andy Warhol’s prolific photographic output, the Lumiére Brothers’ actualité films, and the work of artists using strategies of appropriation today, Dethloff will discuss how such artworks gesture to the very nature of photography, film, and even reality itself.
