Outrage Over Martinez Support for Trump's "Inhumane" Policies Toward Immigrant Children and Families

Commentary: Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement in response to news that Governor Susana Martinez supports the Trump policy that separates families at the US-Mexico border.

"I’m extremely disappointed in Governor Martinez’s decision to embrace President Trump’s inhumane immigration policy that separates children from their families at the border. Her comparison of parents trying to escape violence to armed robbers trying to buy drugs is both appalling and discriminatory. Governor Martinez's words and support do not reflect who we are as New Mexicans or as Americans.

"It’s heartbreaking to hear stories from parents who have had their children literally torn from their arms and isolated in detention centers. The conditions at these detention centers are, at best, inappropriate and, at worst, pose serious health and safety threats to these children.  It’s incomprehensible that any border leader, especially the governor of a border state, would choose to throw their support behind this abhorrent practice that further inflicts trauma on vulnerable children.

"These efforts to treat all immigrants, including those escaping violence and lawfully seeking asylum, as criminals are heartless, inhumane, and a direct contradiction to our values. In Congress and as governor, I will continue to fight for comprehensive immigration reform that keeps families together and rejects President Trump’s misguided efforts."
