Task Force Investigates Officer-involved Shooting Death In Las Cruces

Las Cruces police and the Officer-involved Incident Task Force are investigating a shooting that occurred late Friday evening and resulted in the death of a 29-year-old man.

Preliminary information from the investigation indicates that, about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, officers were dispatched to a disturbance at a home on the 1900 block of Arlington Avenue. Shortly after arrival at the home, one of the officers was injured by a 29-year-old man while a second officer discharged at least one round that struck the man.

The officer’s injuries were not life-threatening. The 29-year-old man was pronounced dead on scene.

Police expect to have a portion of Arlington Avenue, between Fairbanks Drive and Camino Del Rex, closed for most of the night.

As is Las Cruces police procedure, the officer who discharged his weapon will be placed on standard administrative leave.

The task force is comprised of investigators from New Mexico State Police, Las Cruces Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police. Once completed, results of the investigation are shared with the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
