NMSU Las Cruces students to host food, beverage events this fall

For a chance to sip on Harry Potter-themed drinks, or learn about the many varieties of rosé wine, or dine on gourmet five-course meals with international flair, look no further than New Mexico State University this fall.

NMSU’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management has unveiled its roster of student-produced food and beverage events for the fall 2018 semester.

Beginning Sept. 11, weekly lunch service will begin at 100 West Café, the food laboratory for HRTM students in Gerald Thomas Hall.

The prix-fixe lunches are made by students enrolled in HRTM 363, who are supervised by Chef John Hartley, a college assistant professor. Lunch is served on a walk-in basis from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and costs $10 per person. It includes a choice of soup or salad, an entrée, dessert and ice tea, water or coffee.

A different style of cuisine, including vegetarian options, will be showcased each week. The menus will be available online at http://aces.nmsu.edu/100west/100-west-cafe-lunches.html. Lunch service continues through November, with the exception of Thanksgiving week.

On Sept. 13, students enrolled in HRTM 413 and Chef Pete Mitchell, a college assistant professor, will host the first of three dinners this semester for the International Dinner Series. Each dinner starts at 6 p.m. with a wine tasting and hors-d'oeuvre reception in the Bobby Lee Lawrence Academy of Wine. A five-course dinner paired with wine will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the 100 West Café.

This year’s dinners include: Mediterranean (Sept. 13), Latin American (Oct. 18) and “Taste of Bordeaux” (Nov. 15). Tickets are $65 per person and must be purchased in advance. Tickets go on sale Aug. 20 and may be purchased in Gerald Thomas Hall, Room 138.

Throughout the fall semester, HTRM students also will host several beverage events, beginning with the monthly TAP series (The Adjustment Project), a cash-bar service held from 5 to 7 p.m. on select Fridays in the100 West Café.

At each TAP event, specialty cocktails, beers, wine and non-alcoholic beverages – all tailored to a specific theme – will be available for purchase and complimentary appetizers will be served.

All proceeds benefit student clubs, activities and travel.

This year’s TAP events include: Grape Fest (Sept. 7); Homecoming – A Moment in Time, est. 1888 (Oct. 5); and Festive Lights (Dec. 14). The Nov. 9 event called “A Visit to Hogwarts” will celebrate the fictional British school for young wizards and witches in the “Harry Potter” series.

The roster of events also includes two special beverage presentations.

On Sept. 29, the presentation called “10 Shades of Rosé” will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Bobby Lee Lawrence Academy of Wine. Participants will sample a selection of rosé wines made from various grape varietals. Michael Wray, a professor of restaurant management at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, will lead the presentation.

On Oct. 9, a presentation on Latin American spirits will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., also in the Bobby Lee Lawrence Academy of Wine. Tony Cosgrove, of the National Distributing Company, will lead the presentation.

The presentations are $25 per person and RSVP is required. To RSVP, visit the HRTM office in Gerald Thomas Hall or call 575-646-5995.
