The investigation continues into what led to Friday evening’s officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of 29-year-old James Bishop.
So far, the investigation has revealed that, about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, officers were dispatched to a disturbance at a home on the 1900 block of Arlington Avenue. Shortly after arrival at the home, one of the officers was injured by Bishop while a second officer discharged at least one round that struck the 29-year-old man.
Bishop was pronounced deceased on scene. The officer was treated at a local hospital and released.
The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave which is standard protocol for the Las Cruces Police Department.
Further information cannot be released at this time as investigators from a multi-agency task force are still conducting interviews and combing through evidence. LCPD hopes to have a news briefing with additional information later this week. The date and time has yet to be determined.
The Officer-involved Incident Task Force is comprised of investigators from New Mexico State Police, Las Cruces Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police. Once completed, results of the investigation are shared with the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
