Texas Deputy Charged In Deadly Hit-And-Run Resigns

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A veteran West Texas law officer has quit after being accused in a deadly hit-and-run traffic accident while off duty.

Officials say Raymundo Carranza had been an El Paso County Sheriff's deputy for 17 years. Carranza resigned Monday as he faces a charge of accident involving injury or death.

Carranza allegedly was driving his personal vehicle when 26-year-old Richard Lopez was struck and killed Saturday while changing a flat tire.

Investigators say toxicology results are pending for Carranza, who later returned to the scene of the accident and was arrested. He's free on $25,000 bond.

Information was not immediately available on an attorney for Carranza.
