Students raise funds to help Puerto Rico by doing yardwork at $10 an hour, to hire call 575-646-5499.

Las Cruces, NM – On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra met with New Mexico State University Professor of Engineering Technology and Co-Advisor of (AWL) Aggies Without Limits, Kenny Stevens. The group began seven years ago with students, faculty and community members focusing on improving the daily lives of developing communities with infrastructure projects both local and international. Local projects have been in Anthony, Las Cruces – Camp Hope; and Alamogordo – Foxhole homes; and internationally in Mexico, Bolivia and Nicaragua. This summer’s project will be in Utuado, Puerto Rico to build a suspension bridge and install a photovoltaic mini grid after Hurricanes Irma and Maria destroyed most of the island.

Thirty students and volunteers will leave to Puerto Rico on May 14th. Most of the funds for their trip have been raised by the students doing yard work at $10 an hour, but more funds are still needed for materials and supplies. Donations can be made through New Mexico State University’s Make a Statement at https://mas.nmsu.edu. Information is also available at www.aggieswithoutlimits.org; and on Facebook at Aggies Without Limits. Aggies Without Limits will be collaborating with the University of Texas El Paso – Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESWUTEP) with Dr. Yvonne Santiago.
