From Out Of The Shadows by Dr. Vicki L. Ruiz

May 30, 2014 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, Emily Guerra bridges the community with Distinguished Professor of History and Chicano/Latino Studies at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), Dr. Vicki L. Ruiz, award-winning scholar and educator; and author of Mexican American history.

Dr. Ruiz was a mentor to New Mexico State University’s Dr. Isabela Quintana, Honors College Assistant Professor/Department of History, and was a guest speaker as part of the 2014 Duval Lecture for mentors of new faculty in the department. She has been a mentor to young scholars since 1996, twenty-three of her students have received their Ph.D. under her direction.

Her life work in Chicana history began in 1978 when she traveled to Guadalajara to interview labor and civil rights activist Luisa Moreno. Some of Dr. Ruiz’s most recent books are “Latina Legacies: Identity, Biography and Community,” and “From Out of the Shadows: Mexican Women in Twentieth-Century America.”
