Texas State Sen. Rodríguez Collecting Soccer Balls For Migrant Youth In Tornillo

SEN. JOSÉ RODRÍGUEZ

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A Texas state senator is gathering donated soccer balls as Christmas gifts for the more than 2,000 migrant teens being held a tent city in Tornillo, Texas.

KTSM-TV in El Paso, Texas, reports Texas Sen. Jose Rodríguez has launched a soccer ball donation drive for the migrant teens after working out an agreement with federal immigration authorities.

The El Paso Democrat says other advocates have shown up at the facility with donated toys but federal immigration authorities don't allow those gifts inside.

More than 2,300 teens are being held at the remote tent city in Tornillo,

Texas, which opened in June as a temporary, emergency shelter.

The soccer ball drive is one of many donation efforts taking place for detained migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border.
