Storytellers of Las Cruces honor their founder at Annual Jennie Curry Story Fest-June 1

Roma Subedi at COAS Bookstore telling a story.

Las Cruces, NM – On this edition of PUENTES a la comunidad, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra met with Storytellers of Las Cruces participants, Douglas Jackson, Pat Gill, and Roma Subedi (eight-year-old Mesilla Park Elementary School student) to talk to us about the annual “Jennie Curry Story Fest.” The festival honors the founder of Storytellers of Las Cruces, Jennie George Curry, founded in 1927.

Curry published many of her original stories in magazines, including “Highlights for Children,” and in a book entitled “Tumbleweed Tales.” Pat Gill knew and worked with Mrs. Curry for thirty-two years since 1960, next year she will celebrate 60 years as a storyteller. Douglas Jackson has been a storyteller for fourteen years and is very interactive with students taking on roles in his tales. Roma Subedi is one of Jackson’s students. She speaks several languages, English, Spanish, Chinese and Nepalese, which she incorporates in her storytelling.

The Jennie Curry Story Fest will be held Saturday, June 1st from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Branigan Cultural Center, Swartz Room, 501 N. Main Street, downtown Las Cruces, NM. The event is FREE for all ages, families are encouraged to attend. All children will be given a free COAS Book coupon. Storytellers of Las Cruces are featured every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at both COAS Bookstore locations, 317 N. Main Street and 1101 S. Solano Drive. More information available at coasbooks.com and on Facebook at Storytellers of Las Cruces.
