The City of Las Cruces Economic Development Department today announced the launch of a new outdoor public Wifi network at the Plaza de Las Cruces accessible to all users at no cost. The City hopes to encourage more downtown visits and longer visits to the Plaza.

City Council identified downtown WiFi service as a priority in the City’s Strategic Plan and aimed to have it available to the public by 2020. The City is providing this service utilizing CenturyLink, Checs-Net and Comcast as Internet Service Providers. The network is designed to serve the Plaza proper and the stretch of sidewalk between Griggs Avenue and Organ Avenue along Main Street.

The network was installed in June, and bandwidth has recently been added to the connection. It is tuned so users can complete basic web browsing, view email or social media accounts. The City paid approximately $120,000 to pull fiber, hang WiFi access points and install other equipment.

The wireless network is identified as “public_CLC” and does not need a password to access service, however users will be required to accept the terms of service to access
