Las Cruces, NM – On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra met with Raíces Del Saber (Roots of Knowing) Xinachtli Community School Project Coordinator, Lucia Veronica Carmona, and Educator and Curriculum Committee Member, Carlos Aceves. The proposed new dual language public charter school “Raíces Del Saber” is projected to open in August 2019. The school will integrate Mesoamerican Indigenous knowledge as part of the curriculum to promote an appreciation of cultural heritage with an authentic approach to bilingual education using English and Spanish, also Nahuatl as an enrichment language. Raíces Del Saber will begin with grades K-1, adding one grade each year until serving K-5.
A special family event will be held on Saturday, May 19th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lynn Middle School, 950 S. Walnut Street in Las Cruces. They will provide music, Aztec dance, food, activities for children, and a dialogue with parents to discuss more details of the future school and the innovative features of the curriculum. Childcare will provided for children ages 3-8 years.
