NMSU Gets Ready For "Giving Tuesday"

  What is #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. New Mexico State University wants to build on the strength of this global movement to increase exposure and build support for student success.

Every gift, no matter how big or small, will impact the life of a student. #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to build scholarships across campus. On #GivingTuesday, every dollar donated to a scholarship anywhere in the NMSU system will be matched dollar-for-dollar with revenue from the NMSU License Plate program. The License Plate Program is a unique opportunity to show school spirit AND support student success.

How can I have an even bigger impact on the lives of students?

All gifts made to any scholarship fund on Tuesday, December 1 will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

How do I direct my gift to a college, department, or program of my choice?

All gifts made to any scholarship fund on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 will be matched dollar-for-dollar. When making a gift online, search for the specific college, department, program, or fund that you would like your gift to benefit. When making a gift using the printable gift form, indicate the college, program, or fund that you would like your gift to benefit in the gift information section. This can double the amount of your gift, and potentially triple your gift if you work for a company with a Gift Matching Program.

Can I make a gift in honor or memory of someone?

Yes. All gifts made to any scholarship fund on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 will be matched dollar-for-dollar.  We are happy to acknowledge gifts made in honor or in memory of individuals. If you send us a name and address, we'd be happy to send an acknowledgement of the gift to the family. No mention of the dollar amount of the gift will be made.

Is my gift tax deductible?

Yes, to the extent allowable by law. All gifts made to any scholarship fund on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 will be matched dollar-for-dollar. However, you must claim the gift as an itemized deduction on your tax return. The NMSU Foundation is a nonprofit IRC Sec. 501(c)(3) organization that is structurally separate from NMSU and exists solely for NMSU's benefit, serving as the preferred channel for private gifts to all areas of the University.

Will I get a receipt for tax purposes?

Yes. All gifts made to any scholarship fund on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 will be matched dollar-for-dollar. We receipt all gifts in accordance with IRS guidelines. If you give online, you will also receive a confirmation of your gift via email.

How does the Foundation match online donations with its donor records?

The Foundation's gift accounting department analyzes each online gift to verify whether the donor is a graduate, long-time supporter, and or a new donor to the site. Staff members review name and address information (residence and business), graduation dates, and any other comments associated with the gift to correctly match the online donation with the correct donor. Lastly, all gifts made to any scholarship fund on Tuesday, December 1 will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

Is it safe to make a gift online?

Yes. The NMSU Foundation uses industry-standard SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption to protect the confidentiality of your personal information. The NMSU Foundation adheres to the Donor Bill of Rights developed by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the American Association of Fundraising Counsel, the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, and the National Society of Fund Raising Executives. The purpose of the policy is to "assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support."
