Las Cruces Student Suspected of Threatening Phone Call

A 13-year-old boy suspected of making a threatening phone call that briefly put a local middle school on lockdown has been charged with the crime.

The boy, whose identity will not be released because of his age, was identified by police and taken into custody before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22. He has been charged with making a threat that interfered with the school.

Shortly after noon, Las Cruces police learned that someone called 911 from a disconnected cell phone and alleged that another boy was going to cause harm to students at Lynn Middle School. The school was placed on lockdown and several Las Cruces police units responded to the campus.

Within minutes, LCPD’s school resource officer at Lynn interviewed several students and, with the assistance of other officers, identified a possible suspect. The 13-year-old student and his friends were interviewed, and it was determined that he made the threatening phone call. He was taken into custody and charged with the crime.

No weapons were found on the student or at the school, and the threat was determined to be a hoax.

The lockdown was lifted within the hour.
