Las Cruces PAL Boxing Wins At Golden Gloves

  The Las Cruces Police Athletic League (PAL) Boxing Club brought home the overall "Team Trophy" at the New Mexico Golden Gloves tournament. The annual tournament was held in Albuquerque, NM on Friday March 28 thru Saturday March 29th. The Team Trophy goes to the boxing club with the best results throughout the tournament. There were over 40 teams competing in the tournament and  Las Cruces PAL Boxing Club was the only team to get all of its boxers to the championship round.
 
Edwin Acosta, age 19 of Las Cruces, won 1st place in the 141lb Men's Open division. Acosta defeated Eddie Givens of Albuquerque, NM for the championship. Acosta will represent New Mexico in the Golden Gloves regional competition.  Acosta is in his second year at Dona Ana Community College.
 
Edmund Guzman, 18 of Las Cruces, won 2nd place in the 132lb Men's Open division and will be an alternate in the regional Golden Gloves. Guzman returns after a year absence from boxing and has national and international boxing experience. Guzman is a former Silver medalist in the Men's Open USA Championships. Guzman is a senior at Onate High School.
 
Jaime Aquilera, 17 or Las Cruces, won 2nd place in the 123lb Men's Open division and will be an alternate in the regional Golden Gloves competition. Aguilera has been boxing with Las Cruces PAL for 2 years and is a junior at Centennial High School.

Coaches representing Las Cruces PAL Boxing at the tournament was Chris Barela and Brian Nervarez of Las Cruces. The regional Golden Gloves competition will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Saturday April 12, 2014  when New Mexico will face off against the Colorado winners. For winning the team trophy, Barela and Nevarez will coach the New Mexico Golden Gloves team for the regionals up to Las Vegas, NV.

The Las Cruces PAL Boxing Club is a program that for over 40 years, has taken youth of all ages and backgrounds including  “at-risk” youth off the streets and taught them discipline through boxing. For more information on Las Cruces PAL Boxing go to LasCrucesPALBoxing.com
