Jon Nakamatsu and LCSO to perform works by Grieg, Nielsen and Berlioz

Leora Zeitlin

For pianist Jon Nakamatsu, the biggest surprise in the 19 years since he won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997 is “how fast the time has gone.” But, he adds, “what I’m doing is somewhat timeless,” and getting to work with great musicians the world over is “what makes the time go so fast. All I wanted to do was play.” He will perform Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra this weekend in the orchestra’s final concerts of the season. He and conductor Lonnie Klein came to KRWG to talk with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin about the program, the changes in performance style in the era of perfect recordings, and much more.
