Help For Adopted Dogs

May 15, 2015 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges the community, Emily Guerra meets with Executive Director of the Doña Ana County Humane Society (DACHC), Kathy Lawitz, to talk about some of the services they offer the community in a coordinated effort to reduce animal overpopulation and abuse in the county; with programs such as, Animal Relief Fund (ARF) which offers aid to low-income pet owners whose pets have medical emergencies; Pets for Seniors; and Ruff-To-Ready – a free training program for owners of locally adopted dogs to show dog owners how to correct their pet’s bad behaviors like barking, biting and chewing to keep them in their new homes. Ruff-To-Ready trainers also teach owners how to communicate and work with their pets. In 2012, nearly half of the adopted dogs that were returned to the Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley were returned for behavior problems.

DACHS is a non-profit organization which receives most of its funds from fund-raising. On Wednesday, May 20th St. Clair Winery & Bistro in Mesilla will host “Yappy Hour” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., proceeds will benefit DACHS and S.N.A.P. (Spay Neuter Action Program.) Another benefit for the pets of Doña Ana County will be held on Saturday, May 30th, “Paws & Claws Road Rally.” For more information visit DACHS on the web www.dachslc.org or www.dogcruces.com, call 575-541-5772 or 575-642-2648.
