Commentary: Today, Congresswoman Deb Haaland called for a climate change an emergency declaration signing on to the Democratic resolution that acknowledges climate change as an existential emergency. The Climate Emergency Resolution, introduced by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and U.S. Representatives Earl Blumenauer and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calls for the United States to join 740 local governments and sixteen countries in declaring a climate emergency.
“Our children deserve to inherit a planet that has clean air, drinkable water, and manageable weather patterns, but right now climate change is threatening their future,” said Congresswoman Deb Haaland, Vice Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee. “By declaring climate change an emergency, we’re acknowledging the threat to our families and communities so we can act on climate with a full range of resources.”
Haaland is working to make New Mexico a leader in addressing climate change while boosting the renewable energy economy through her role as Vice Chair of the Natural Resources Committee. As Chair of the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands, Haaland is making it a priority to reduce the carbon emissions produced on public lands. She continues to support new legislation, including the Green New Deal, to help protect New Mexico’s land, air, and water.
