El Paso Group To March Against Bus Facility Near Bowie High School

The group Familias Unidas Del Chamizal issued the following statement opposing a bus facility planned near Bowie High School:

Commentary: Chamizal community residents and Bowie parents have called for a march to protest the school districts’ plans to construct a school bus hub that includes 80 buses and a large maintenance facility next to Bowie High School. The March will begin in front of Bowie High School on San Marcial and Delta streets this Thursday the 28th at 4:30 pm.

The Chamizal Community is considered one of the most contaminated areas in El Paso in part due to the heavy Maquila Truck traffic the addition of the 80 buses would add to that contamination and the heavy traffic in the area. The School district has refused to provide any information regarding environmental or health assessments that the community has been requesting. The School District owns land in other areas which could be used.  Imposing the Bus Hub next to the school is a violation of environmental laws. The Bus Hub will also require the demolition of the Nemo Herrera Memorial Base Ball field which is one of the communities green areas with numerous large trees and plants.  It is also the home of burrowing owls which are on the protected endangered list.  Community residents and parents would rather see the millions on the bus hub invested in Barrio Education. Residents have also suggested that the surplus property be developed as a memorial community park for the Chamizal children.
