Dichos - Sayings or Mexican Idioms

An Evening with Irene Oliver Lewis. "Cecilia-isms--Dichos de mi madre," Saturday, April 16th, at the Rio Grande Theatre, 7:30 pm.

Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra meets with Theater Artist and Community Arts Advocate, Irene Oliver-Lewis. Fourteen years ago, in honor of her parents, Cecilia Fitch-Oliver and Fred Frietze Oliver, she wrote and performed a one-woman play called “Cecilia-isms—Dichos de Mi Madre” (sayings of my Mother). Her recent retirement as Artistic Producer and Founder of the Court Youth Center and Alma D’Arte Charter School has allowed her to revisit and update her play. There are many ways we can recall and reflect on our childhood, through music, the theater, or a good story or saying. She says “dichos,” sayings or Mexican idioms are like family stories, they are part of you wherever you go, they become part of our vocabulary and help us remember our stories from generation to generation.

You can share “An Evening with Irene Oliver-Lewis” and listen to her humorous reflections of her mother and father growing up in the Mesquite Historic Neighborhood on Saturday, April 16th at 7:30 p.m. at the Rio Grande Theatre, 211 North Main Street, Las Cruces.
