Candidate Announces For Las Cruces School Board, District 4

LAS CRUCES – Community volunteer, public school advocate, and mother, Teresa Tenorio announced she is running for the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education in District 4.  Here is a statemtne from Tenorio's campaign:

Teresa is a 2018 Emerge NM graduate, an intensive training program empowering women of New Mexico to create change in their communities through elected representation. Most recently, Teresa was appointed to the Public Education Department’s 40-member Student Success Task Force.

“I am running for school board because I feel a moral responsibiity to give back. As a lifelong learner, I am approachable, reflective, and responsive. I’m committed to helping public education meet the needs of our students, families, and community, and I will bring new energy and continued upstanding advocacy to the school district.”

Tenorio grew up in the small town of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, where she was raised by teachers and ranchers. Teresa credits her upbringing for her love of youth, community, the outdoors, and public education. She comes from a long line of educators, spanning over 3 generations, including her grandparents, parents, sister, and in-laws. Tenorio and her husband Manuel Sanchez have lived in the North Valley for 8 years with their three daughters, who will be entering grades 4, 2, and kindergarten at East Picacho Elementary this upcoming school year. In April, Mr. Sanchez was appointed by the governor to the Doña Ana Board of County Commissioners.

For several years, Teresa led a local wellness group for expecting women and mothers with young children. She coaches two City Recreational Youth basketball teams and teaches catechism. Prior to starting her family, Teresa worked directly with youth and community for over 10 years on various education, health, and leadership initiatives, including UNM ACL Teen Centers; UT Children’s Learning Institute; National Hispanic Youth Initiative; UNM Upward Bound; NMHU GEAR UP; Luna Community Youth College; NM Youth Conservation Corps; and MESA.

Over the last 4 years, Teresa has been strongly involved in efforts locally and statewide to reclaim public education, having attended community input meetings, scholar and youth presentations; proposed a K-2 bill to state legislators; hosted pro-learning information booths; defended the Next Generation Science Standards to the Public Education Department; and joined local advocates in an audit request to LCPS regarding standardized testing and resources.

As a board member, she will continue to seek local input towards well rounded curricula and a rational assessment system. Teresa understands that our youth respond best to relevant, challenging yet enjoyable learning approaches, enhanced by meeting the needs of the whole child. Our priority on students must determine where to put funding, staffing, and resources, in addition to how we structure the school day and school year. She believes in empowering our teachers and school employees, and advocates for the proper resources and training to fulfill their mission within our schools. She envisions our school communities being further strengthened by support for and collaboration among teachers, employees, and administrators, and through fostering community partnerships and family involvement.

“I believe that all children are our children and that the school’s work environment is our children’s learning environment. We share in the accountability. As your public servant, I will work cooperatively to ensure that the democratic foundation of Las Cruces Public Schools is strong and that our schools provide the secure and inspiring launching point from which our youth can aspire towards their full potential.”
