Fall has officially arrived along with a new academic year, and musicians from the major student ensembles at NMSU will welcome both with the fifth annual “Autumn Overture” concerts to showcase their talents. The opening concert will feature the top band at the university, the NMSU Wind Symphony, performing a “British Invasion” of five British composers. NMSU Director of Bands Michael Mapp came to talk with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin to discuss the concert and the composers.
The Wind Symphony will perform a staple of the wind band repertoire, the First Suite by Gustav Holst, as well as newer works by Edward Gregson, Judith Bingham, and David Bedford. Capping off the concert will be a piece by Hayden Wood, who is known for his light, upbeat music. Mapp said the students “are just as excited for this concert as I am, because they get to showcase their passion for making music.” Rehearsing three times per week since the semester began in late August, the students “have really come together to make this concert really special,” Mapp said.
The “British Invasion” concert takes place Oct. 1 at 7:30 at the Atkinson Recital Hall. Other ensembles to perform in the Autumn Overture series are the University Choirs on Oct. 4, the Philharmonic Orchestra on Oct. 8, the Symphonic Band on Oct. 10 and the Jazz Ensemble on Oct. 11.
