Visiting Artist & Scholar Series: Carolyn Salas

In collaboration with the Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series and the University Art Museum, exhibiting artist Carolyn Salas will present an lecture on her artwork, research, and the collaborative processes behind her latest work for the upcoming museum exhibition, "Night Vision."

Carolyn Salas crafts multidimensional chromatic sculptures that oscillate between geometric abstraction and figuration. Drawing inspiration from healing therapies and dream analysis, Salas composes forms using a fresh lexicon of symbols and materials. Her work references themes of ritual, female strength and resilience, mental health, and art history.

Salas holds a BFA in Sculpture from the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico and an MFA from Hunter College in New York. She is represented by Mrs. Gallery in New York and Brintz Gallery in Palm Beach, Florida. Her work has been featured in numerous national and international exhibitions, including The Hole Gallery in New York, NY; the Berkshire Museum in Massachusetts; the Torrance Art Museum in California; Ever Gold [Projects] in San Francisco, CA; Leo Konig Gallery and Kasey Kaplan Gallery in New York City; Towson University in Baltimore, MD; and Páramo Gallery in Guadalajara, Mexico, among others.

Salas has participated in residencies at the Abrons Art Center A.I.R. Space Program, The NARS Foundation, and the Blue Mountain Center, among others. She is also a recipient of the Chashama Studio Space award and the Elizabeth Foundation Studio Program/Space award. Born in Hollywood, CA, Carolyn Salas now lives and works in Brooklyn and Upstate New York.

The Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series is sponsored by the NMSU Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences and funded by the Lilian Steinman Visiting Artist Fund.
