Obama Speech on Education Optional for LCPS Students

Las Cruces, NM – Tuesday some students in the Las Cruces Public School District had the opportunity to listen to President Barack Obama's speech on education and the importance of achieving goals. But as KRWG's Melissa Aguilera reports parents could sign a form preventing their children from participating.

Swine Flu at ENMU

Portales – Two Eastern New Mexico University students have been confirmed with swine flu.

ENMU President Steven Gamble says the cases were confirmed Friday, and the parents of the students took them home.

Gamble says it's better for everyone if the students can recover at home. Both students were from outside Portales.

The cases were announced on the university's Web site and in an e-mail to faculty and students.

However, Gamble says he expects business as usual at the Portales school.

Holder Not Speaking About Richardson Case

New Mexico – Attorney General Eric Holder avoided reporters seeking comment about his agency's decision not to bring charges against Gov. Bill Richardson and former top aids in an alleged pay-to-play scheme.

Holder was in Albuquerque to give the keynote speech Thursday at the Hispanic National Bar Association's annual convention.

Organizers stationed reporters in an area opposite from where Holder spoke inside a hotel ballroom.

Afterward, he left without taking questions.

Border Communication for Police

El Paso – Mexico and the U.S. are creating a trans-border communications network that will help police on both sides fight crime and violence.

A U.S. State Department official says secure voice, data and video channels, costing about $7 million on the U.S. side, are expected to be online within three years. The Department of Homeland Security and Mexico's Secretary of Public Security are working out the details.
