Frontier Closing Las Cruces Center

Las Cruces – In an effort to optimize operations in advance of its emergence from Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection, Frontier Airlines Holdings, Inc. announced today that it will close its Las Cruces reservations operation, cutting more than 100 local jobs.

Pipe Bomb Safely Destroyed

Elephant Butte – State police say no one was hurt by a pipe bomb left at Elephant Butte Lake.

Bomb technicians were able to destroy the pipe bomb Saturday night.

Officials at Elephant Butte Lake got a call Saturday night about a suspicious package left along the shore.

State police discovered the pipe bomb.

Los Alamos To Begin Demolition

New Mexico – Los Alamos National Laboratory is beginning a demolition project that will help close its largest active disposal area.

The lab on Wednesday plans to begin demolishing the first of several containment domes at Technical Area 54, a milestone toward closing the disposal area known as Area G.

The 22,500-square-foot dome to be destroyed, Dome 226, once stored drums of radioactive waste.

Councilman Waives Salary To Help City

Farmington – Farmington City Councilman Jason Sandel is waiving his $10,000 annual salary to help the city in tough economic times.

Sandel, who is executive vice president of Aztec Well Servicing Co., says he hopes the money will help save a city job.

The northwestern New Mexico city plans to eliminate 60 positions through attrition as part of $3.3 million in cuts in the face of declining gross receipts tax revenue.

Report: Texas Ranks 49th In Stimulus Funds

Texas – Records show Texas ranks 49th in federal stimulus funding per resident.

A Dallas Morning News analysis of federal grants and contracts, in Monday's editions, shows Texas has been approved for about $12.9 billion in stimulus grants and contracts. That doesn't include the estimated $4.2 billion that Texans received through the law's main individual tax credit, according to federal estimates.

Las Cruces – Las Cruces city government is initiating an action plan to deal with an outbreak of the H1N1 Flu as the fall and winter flu season draws near.

Record Enrollment At WNMU

Silver City – From WNMU: Enrollment increases at Western New Mexico University set a new record for student population numbers during the Fall 2009 semester.

A 16% increase in student headcount has led to the highest enrollment at WNMU since its inception in 1893 with more than 3,200 students enrolled.

Credit hours are up 22% when compared to fall 2008.

Unemployment Holds Steady In Las Cruces

Las Cruces – The unemployment rate for August held steady in Las Cruces, but rose statewide.

The Las Cruces unemployment rate was 7.4 percent, just below the New Mexico's rate of 7.5 percent, a half point increase from July.

While the labor markets remains difficult statewide, the national unemployment rate is significantly worse at 9.7 percent.

Brutal Killings In Juarez

El Paso – Authorities say they have found three human heads along a highway in northern Mexico, and the search continues for the bodies.

A spokesman for the Chihuahua state Attorney General's Office says the heads were placed in three coolers beside a roadside monument known as "The Seven Little Heads". With it was a banner saying, "For those who keep stealing."

Police found the heads after receiving a call.

Soldiers are searching for the bodies.
