Sheriff Seeks Fugitive

Las Cruces – The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department is asking for the public's assistance in locating an individual wanted for Second degree kidnapping and other related criminal charges stemming from a Domestic incident.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of RALPH LIRA, age 19, of Odessa, Texas, charging him with Kidnapping in the Second Degree, Aggravated Battery Against a Household Member, Battery Against a Household Member, Interference with Communications and Criminal Damage to Property.

Student Computing Competition Looks For Teams

Las Cruces – A statewide competition designed to attract New Mexico students interested in computer science is looking for local teams to participate.

The Supercomputing Challenge has opened its registration for teams of middle and high school students interested in addressing real-world problems with computer technology. Over the course of the school year "Challenge" participants learn how to solve real world problems with the help of scientific mentors and team sponsors. Teams compete for awards, prizes and scholarships.

Five Rescued After Night in Desert

El Paso – Five men are safe after spending a night stranded in the Texas desert east of El Paso.

El Paso County deputies, working with the U.S. Border Patrol, rescued the men Sunday morning after one of them called for help.

The group, deputies said, got stranded trying to find a piece of property a relative had bought in the desert. They were found in nearby Hudpseth County.

NM Tribes Confront Gangs and Violence

New Mexico – Officials from the U.S. Justice Department and tribal leaders will meet Monday and Tuesday to talk about how to combat violence and crime in American Indian communities.

Federal officials want to learn about chronic problems such as gangs, drug traffickers and loopholes in law enforcement on tribal lands during the work sessions.

NM Begins Pedestrian Safety Campaign

New Mexico – New Mexico is beginning a campaign aimed at reducing pedestrian fatalities.

The campaign will include both law enforcement and ads to raise public awareness.

New Mexico had 278 pedestrian fatalities between 2004 and 2008.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has identified New Mexico as a pedestrian safety focus state. That's a designation given to areas that have recorded high numbers of pedestrian fatalities and injuries.

Arrest After Shots Fired At DACC

Las Cruces – At approximately 7:31 pm Monday, officers with the NMSU Police Department and the Las Cruces Police Department arrested 22-year old Omi Gutierrez in connection with a drive-by shooting Monday afternoon at the Dona Ana Community College main campus. No one was injured in the incident.

Aggies Fall To Miners 38-12

Las Cruces – Following a three-hour weather delay, the New Mexico State football team struggled against UTEP and fell to the Miners, 38-12, Saturday night. The Aggies' two-game win streak over the I-10 rivals was snapped with the loss.

"We hung in there for awhile with them," head coach DeWayne Walker said. "We turned the ball over and let the game get away from us. We'll go back to the drawing board and get ready for another rivalry next week."

Texas Students Must Have Shots By Oct. 1

Texas – The Oct. 1 deadline for some students to get certain vaccinations to guard against preventable diseases such as meningitis and whooping cough is rapidly approaching.

Texas Department of State Health Services officials extended the deadline on Aug.24 by more than a month after new requirements led to local shortages at health care centers.

Students who don't have the required shots after the deadline won't be allowed to attend classes.

Two Children Drown In Collected Rainwater

Vado – Saturday at approximately 4:17 p.m. Dona Ana County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the 28 block of Presa Road in Vado, after it was reported that a father had pulled from a pool of water, his children, ages 5 and 3, who were unresponsive.

The children, according to the father and witnesses, had wandered away from a family gathering.

Noticing that his children were not around, the father immediately started a search of the area with family members, friends and neighbors.
