Child In Critical Condition; Anthony, NM Mother Charged

Anthony, NM – DASO Investigators are currently conducting an on-going investigation resulting from a child, five years old, being transported to Providence Hospital, El Paso, on Sunday, June 20, with "multiple injuries and unconscious."

According to Sheriff's Investigator Mark Sanchez, Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to Providence Hospital at approximately 2:11 p.m. Sunday.

Las Cruces Students Learn About Forestry

Las Cruces – Students from the Aztec Youth Academy in Las Cruces recently completed a tree planting project that offered valuable lessons in community forestry and landscape design.

The project, funded by the New Mexico Forest Re-Leaf Program, involved planting 27 native or well established trees around the John Paul Taylor Education Center.

New Sentence On Tap For Former Qwest CEO

New Mexico – A federal judge in Denver is holding hearings to help determine a new sentence for former Qwest CEO Joseph Nacchio on insider trading convictions.

Nacchio was sentenced in 2007 to serve six years in prison, pay $19 million in fines and forfeit $52 million, but a federal appeals court ruled the sentence was too harsh because a judge miscalculated Nacchio's net gains from stock sales allegedly based on insider information.

Texas Governor In China

Texas – Gov. Rick Perry says his first trip to China has led to increased exposure for Texas in Asia.

Perry, in a conference call from Taiwain on Monday, told reporters that he held talks with two Chinese companies that are interested in making investments in Houston and in Corpus Christi. Specifics were not released.

Perry also says he took part in conversations that could result in direct flights from Texas to Shanghai and Beijing, with routes including Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston.

New Native American Scholarship

New Mexico – After receiving $490,000 in federal funding, New Mexico Military Institute is offering full-ride scholarships to 20 Native American students who are interested in pursuing an associate's degree in criminal justice.

NMMI spokesman Carl Hansen says officials from the Roswell school visited with New Mexico pueblos and were told there's a great need for tribal members trained in law enforcement.

Las Cruces Addressing Sewage Odor

Las Cruces – Las Cruces city officials are planning to relocate a composting operation at the wastewater treatment plant.

The effort should reduce complaints about a strong smell near the plant.

The composting operation takes semi-wet sludge the organic matter screened from wastewater and preps it for disposal. The process was identified by an engineering firm, which was hired to study the odor problem, as a key source of the stench.

Second Fire Burning In The Organ Mountains, 4 Miles East Of Las Cruces

Las Cruces – The fire started on Dept of Defense (DOD) jurisdiction, within the Ft. Bliss Dona Ana Range 50. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is providing resources to assist with the firefighting effort. An estimated 3500 acres has already burned and air crews can be seen flying overhead fighting the blaze, which officials have categorized as a human-caused fire.

Police Find More Than 1500 Marijuana Plants

Socorro – Police have pulled more than 1,500 marijuana plants from along the Rio Grande in the Socorro area.

The drug bust has been in the works for about two months. Detectives say a citizen spotted some of the plants and called police.

Socorro Police Detective Richard Lopez says the marijuana operation was very elaborate and sophisticated. It included solar panels, water pumps, batteries and hundreds of yards of hose at three crop sites along the river. All of the equipment was run off of timers.

Catholic Church Warns Of Cartel Control In Mexico

Juarez, Mexico – Mexico's Roman Catholic Church says drug cartels now control parts of some cities and warns that the gangs may be trying to influence this year's state elections.

The Archdiocese of Mexico says in an editorial that organized crime groups may try "to impose candidates" in the July 4 elections that will decide 12 of Mexico's 31 governorships.

It says cartels may also try to impede voters from going to the polls.

State Residents Having Trouble Hunting In New Mexico

New Mexico – Santa Fe retiree Ron Hammond says he'll have to go to Wyoming again this year because he can't get an antelope hunting permit in New Mexico.

Apparently, Hammond is not alone.

The New Mexico Wildlife Federation tells the Albuquerque Journal in a copyright story says New Mexico's generosity to in-state landowners and out-of-state hunters combines to squeeze out locals, and the situation is getting worse.

The federation's director, Jeremy Vesbach, says the annual draw for a big game license is an unfair system.

Harvard Student's Deportation Deferred

Texas – Officials say an undocumented Harvard University student is no longer facing deportation to Mexico after being detained by immigration authorities at a Texas airport.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said late Friday that they would not pursue the deportation of Eric Balderas. The 19-year-old was detained June 7 after he tried to use a university ID card to board a plane from San Antonio to Boston.
