A Wait For Results On Bond D

Las Cruces, NM – Voting results for Bond D which is an allocation to fund capital improvements at colleges and universities remains undetermined.

The measure contains one hundred and fifty-five million dollars total with around twenty-eight point four million for capital improvement projects at NMSU and DACC. It would also provide five point six million dollars for phase three of the Gadsden campus of Dona Ana Community College. All of NMSU's branch campuses would be affected as well.

Two UTEP Students Murdered In Juarez

Juarez, Mexico – Two University of Texas El Paso students died in a shooting attack on a car, and one was the fifth American murdered in Ciudad Juarez in six days.

The U.S. Consulate in Ciudad Juarez says 23-year-old Eder Diaz was killed Tuesday evening along with a classmate. The consulate said it had not yet confirmed whether the other victim was also a U.S. citizen.

An investigator from the state of Chihuahua identified the second victim as 25-year-old Manuel Acosta, and said he was from Chihuahua's capital.

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police are warning residents to refrain from placing payment checks in unsecured mailboxes as they could easily be stolen and fraudulently used by the perpetrator.

In the past couple of weeks LCPD detectives have investigated a handful of fraud and forgery cases related to personal checks that appear to have been stolen from residential mailboxes and then washed, or bleached, and cashed by the perpetrator for much higher amounts.

Las Cruces Area Girl Accused Of Trying To Poison Father's Pregnant Girlfriend

Las Cruces – Last night at approximately 6:50 p.m. Dona Ana County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a residence in the north valley after receiving a call from a male individual, age 51, who reported that his 15 year old daughter attempted to poison his pregnant girlfriend, age 34.

The Victim had been served pasta and noticed that the pasta appeared to have some discoloration and noticing the discoloration, did not consume the pasta.

Las Cruces City Manager Accepts New Job To Start In January

Las Cruces – Las Cruces City Manager Terrence Moore has accepted in principal, an offer to become the next city manager of Morgantown, West Virginia.

Moore, who has been Las Cruces city manager since February 2005, will remain in his current position through December 31st. He is tentatively scheduled to begin as Morgantown city manager in January 2011.

Martinez Elected Governor; Pearce Regains Second District House Seat

New Mexico – Republican Steve Pearce beat Democratic incumbent Harry Teague by ten points to regain the Second District House Seat. Republican Susana Martinez has won the New Mexico governor's race, making history as the first Hispanic woman to become a state's chief executive.

The 51-year-old Martinez defeated Democrat Diane Denish to also become New Mexico's first female governor.

There was no incumbent in the race. Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson was barred from seeking re-election because he served two consecutive terms.

GOP Picks Up NM House Seats

New Mexico – Republicans have chipped away at the Democratic majority in the state House of Representatives.

At least four Democrat incumbents lost Tuesday as Republicans took advantage of an anti-incumbent sentiment among voters.

Republicans were leading in other races that could allow them to pick up four additional seats, according to unofficial returns.

Republican Cathrynn Brown defeated Democratic caucus chairman John Heaton of Carlsbad, who had served in the Legislature since 1997.

Good Night For Texas GOP

Texas – Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Attorney General Greg Abbott each won third terms in a GOP sweep of statewide offices heading toward its 20th year.

Dewhurst defeated Linda Chavez-Thompson, a labor leader and vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

Abbott beat his Democratic challenger, Barbara Ann Radnofsky, a Houston attorney who ran unsuccessfully for Kay Bailey Hutchison's U.S. Senate seat in 2006.

Perry Wins Third Term

Texas – The first Democrat in a generation said to have a real shot at winning the Texas governor's race -- lost.

White, after conceding to GOP Gov. Rick Perry, told supporters that it was a "a very difficult election year."

Perry, in the final days of the campaign, repeatedly made the former Houston mayor and the White House one and the same.

Perry called White an "Obama style individual" while running side-by-side pictures of the two men in his campaign ads.

GOP Makes Huge Gains In Texas House

Texas – Texas Democrats suffered staggering losses in the state Legislature, losing their House leader and several longtime incumbents who weren't even considered vulnerable.

Twenty-one Democrats lost yesterday, including 14-year veteran Rep. Jim Dunnam of Waco, the longtime Democratic House leader, who was defeated by rancher Marva Beck.

New Mexico Approves Cap And Trade Plan

New Mexico – New Mexico regulators have voted 4-3 to approve a proposal for establishing a greenhouse gas emissions cap-and-trade program.

The New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board on Tuesday spent more than four hours considered a petition by the Environment Department to allow the state to participate in a regional cap-and-trade program with the other Western states and Canadian provinces that make up the Western Climate Initiative.
