Major Country Concert Coming To Las Cruces

Las Cruces – George Strait and Reba McEntire will appear in concert in the round with special guest Lee Ann Womack on Friday, March 25th at the Pan American Center at New Mexico State University. Strait's last appearance at the Pan Am featured a sold out show with special guest Taylor Swift in February 2007.

Las Cruces City Pools Re-open

Las Cruces – Repair work has been completed at the Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center (LCRAC) and Frenger Pool. Both facilities are now open.

LCRAC hours are:

Mon - Thu: 5a.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Fri: 5 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Sat: 7 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Sun: Noon - 7:30 p.m.


Frenger Pool hours are:

Mon - Fri:

6 a.m. - 9 a.m.

11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Closed weekends.

Three Relatives Of Murdered Juarez Activist Disappear

Juarez, Mexico – Mexician authorities say they are investigating the disappearance of three relatives of a human-rights activist who was assassinated last year in the Juarez valley along the U.S. border with Texas.

Chihuahua state prosecutors spokesman Arturo Sandoval says the office received a complaint that three people related to Josefina Reyes were forced from their car Monday southeast of the border city of Ciudad Juarez.

NMSU Cooperative Extension Specialists Teach In Dominican Republic

Las Cruces – Two New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service specialists shared their knowledge of good agricultural and manufacturing practices recently with agricultural students in the Dominican Republic.

Nancy Flores, Extension food safety specialist, and Del Jimenez, agriculture specialist, participated in the Partners of the Americas Farmer to Farmer program, which is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Senator Asks AG To Investigate Gas Outage

New Mexico – Questa Senator Carlos Cisneros (D-Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, Taos-6) has hand-delivered a letter to New Mexico Attorney General, Gary King asking him to conduct an immediate and full investigation into the natural gas outage that has left thousands of New Mexicans in the cold. Senator Cisneros called the outage, "a heartbreaking and dangerous crisis."

Keller: Bill Would Require Accountability For Film Subsidy

New Mexico – Albuquerque Senator Tim Keller (D-Bernalillo-17) introduced a film tracking and accountability bill, Senate Bill 44 (SB44) that would make a clear assessment of the impact of New Mexico's Film Production Tax Credit. SB44 would put to rest the ongoing debate about if the film incentives are a strong benefit to the state.

Holloman Prepares For First Major Inspection Since 2004

Alamogordo – Team Holloman participated in a Operational Readiness Exercise Jan. 25 through 27 that evaluated the base's ability to respond to a short-notice deployment of more than 400 personnel from a cross-section of jobs.

The ORE was also in preparation for an upcoming Operational Readiness Inspection scheduled for April, which will be the wing's first major inspection since 2004.

Bill Would Ban Teen Tanning

New Mexico – Teenagers under 18 could no longer use tanning beds under a measure pending in the Legislature.

Proponents say the restrictions would protect teenagers from cancer risks.

Democratic Sens. Mary Jane Garcia, Cynthia Nava and Dede Feldman introduced a bill Monday to make it a misdemeanor for tanning salons to allow younger teens to use a tanning device.

NM Committee Preserves Emissions Rules

New Mexico – A panel of New Mexico lawmakers has stalled another effort aimed at undoing rules that would curb greenhouse gas emissions statewide and allow New Mexico to participate in a regional cap-and-trade program.

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday voted 7-4 to table the bill introduced by Republican Sen. Clinton Harden of Clovis.

Texas Bill Targets "Sexting"

Texas – Teens younger than age 18 could face a misdemeanor charge, not a felony, for "sexting" under a bill filed in the Texas Legislature.

Sexting is cell phones are used, typically by teenagers, to send each other sexually explicit messages or images.

The measure by state Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin was endorsed Monday by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.

The bill would reclassify a sexting offense as a Class C misdemeanor for underage first-time violators.

Crews Still Working To Restore Gas Service

New Mexico – The New Mexico Gas Company said Tuesday 62 percent of service has been restored to Espanola and 54 percent in Taos.

Residents and business owners in the Taos and Espanola areas have been without natural gas service since last week. More winter weather is forecast Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Gov. Susana Martinez is sending an additional 300 National Guard troops and airmen to help restore natural gas service to thousands of residents in northern New Mexico.

Hundreds Rally In Santa Fe

Santa Fe – Immigrant rights supporters want Republican Gov. Susana Martinez to drop her policy of requiring state police to check the immigration status of criminal suspects.

Several hundred people rallied at the Capitol on Monday to protest the governor's directive to state law enforcement. They also oppose the administration's push to repeal a law allowing driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

El Paso Water Restrictions Lifted; Boil Order Still In Effect

El Paso – El Paso's water emergency appears to have passed, but the boil water order is still in effect.

An El Paso Water Utilities statement says stringent water use restrictions will be lifted Monday night

Mayor John Cook had issued a water emergency on Sunday to stiffen enforcement of the restrictions. The clampdown came after last week's frigid temperatures caused leaks in the West Texas city's water distribution system that lowered the city's reservoir levels.
