Heinrich: Job Creation Still Lagging

Fred Martino interviews Rep. Martin Heinrich, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in a race against State Auditor Hector Balderas.  Heinrich says Congress needs to pass legislation to spur job creation, including the Senate version of the Highway bill.  Heinrich also discusses his efforts to protect the Organ Mountains and surrounding areas through a National Monument designation and legislation he is co-sponsoring to ensure employers may not demand social networking passwords.

New Mexico Auditor Hector Balderas

Hector Balderas (D) New Mexico Auditor

Fred Martino interviews state auditor Hector Balderas.  They discuss the audit of Sunland Park as well as many federal issues.  Balderas is running against Rep. Martin Heinrich for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.  The primary will be held on June 5 and is restricted to those registered with a political party.  Former Rep. Heather Wilson is running against Las Cruces businessman Greg Sowards for the Republican nomination.  The seat becomes available in 2013 due to the retirement of Democratic U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman.

Fred Martino interviews Marlene Salas-Provance of the New Mexico State University Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders.  They discuss the 50th Anniversary of the Edgar R. Garrett Speech and Hearing Center at NMSU.  The center is hosting a community open house and celebration on May 4, 2012, from 5pm to 8pm.  Free food, music, clinic tours, and activities for children.  Information:  575-646-2402.

Sonja Gerth, German Radio Journalist

RIAS Berlin was a legendary voice in Germany’s broadcasting landscape from 1946 through 1993.

The radio station was established by the U.S. Government, and while it stopped broadcasting in 1993, the name RIAS Berlin continued with a new mission, a journalist exchange program.

Twice a year, American journalists travel to Germany and German journalists come to the United States.

In 1955, the Montgomery bus boycott in Alabama signaled the start of the modern civil rights movement in the United States. Some of the organizers of the boycott, such as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, became nationwide symbols of African-Americans' struggle for equality.
