September 19, 2014 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, Emily Guerra profiles Hispanic leaders in the community. Her guest is Casa de Peregrinos Emergency Food Program Executive Director, Lorenzo Alba, Jr.; 2012 alumni of Leadership Las Cruces. His advice for students to succeed is to “listen” and “get involved.”

Alba’s passion in life is “to serve the less fortunate.” He says that “hunger affects many people in our community; the most vulnerable are children and seniors.” For the second year in a row, New Mexico ranks #1 in child hunger. So far this year, more than 800,000 pounds of food have been distributed by Casa de Peregrinos (CDP) in 14 pantries throughout Dona Ana County. Forty percent of the people they serve are children. CDP has also been able to provide assistance for 180 veterans and their families.

September is “Hunger Action Month” nationally. Find out how you can help by visiting CDP’s webpage at www.casadeperegrinos.org and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/Casa-de-Peregrinos-Emergency-Food-Program. More donors and volunteers are needed; call 575-523-5542 to “Get Involved.”
