Udall Statement Honoring Veterans Day

Former U.S. Senator Tom Udall D-NM

SANTA FE, N.M. – Today, U.S. Senator Tom Udall released the following statement in honor of Veterans Day:

“Today, 100 years since the signing of the armistice ending World War I, we honor the brave men and women from New Mexico and across the United States who have sacrificed to defend our values and protect our freedoms, both at home and abroad. New Mexicans carry a long and storied tradition of military service. From enduring the brutal Bataan Death March during World War II to braving the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, our veterans, service members, and their families have proudly answered the call to duty, no matter the personal cost.

“We are eternally grateful for their service and forever in debt to their sacrifice. But these heroes deserve more than gratitude and thanks. We must show them the same devotion and dedication they have shown to us, not just through our words on Veterans Day but with our actions every day. That’s why it’s more important than ever that we recommit ourselves to ensuring that all veterans have the resources they need to return to civilian life safely and securely, with stable housing, quality health care, and promising job opportunities and educational training.

“President John F. Kennedy once said that a nation reveals itself not only by the people it produces, but by the people it honors and remembers. On this Veterans Day, we honor and remember the best of us -- and affirm the values and ideals we hold most dear: service, sacrifice, and courage. Today, and on all days, we pledge to serve our veterans and service members as well as they have served us.”
