Trump's Go-It-Alone Policy Is Not Working

Commentary: Trump tore up the Iran nuclear deal put in place by his predecessor (Obama) despite appeals by our European allies that we ought to build on what we have and make it better. Trump said no. He now is starting from zero with few chances for success. He is great at tearing up deals like the Paris Climate agreement or trade agreements (NAFTA) with no real strategy for making them better.

His go it alone policy is not working. We live in an interconnected world whether we like it or not. Components for production of cars, trucks, appliances, airplanes, etc. come from many countries and that is not going to change. That is also true in international political economics. Putting tariffs on Chinese goods would be much more effective if we did it in concert with our allies, who are also concerned about their trading practices.

In his speech about the Iran deal he said “I” many times. There are nearly 7 billion people in the world and we represent only 5% of the total. Sure, we are the World’s biggest economy (but China is catching up) and have the biggest military That was also true in the time of the Roman Empire or in more recent time, when the British Colonial Empire (1922) held sway over about 458 million people or one-quarter of the world's population.
