Sister Cities Promote World Peace and Positive International Relations

Las Cruces International Festival March 21st

March 13, 2015 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, Emily Guerra bridges the community with the Chair of the Las Cruces/Lerdo Sister Cities Committee, Hale Huber. Nearly 60 years ago, “Sister Cities International” was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote world peace and positive international relations. Sister Cities are intended to unite citizens of both countries to develop friendship and international understanding through business, cultural and educational exchanges. There are now over 2,000 partnerships in the United States paired with more than 1,700 foreign cities from all over the world.

Las Cruces has two Sister City affiliations. In 1989, Lerdo, Mexico, 600 miles south of Las Cruces, became the first Sister City with Las Cruces; and in 1993, Nienberg, in Northwestern Germany, became the second Las Cruces Sister City. With roots in Germany, and an interest in Mexico, Huber has been involved with both Sister Cities. He says that the Las Cruces Sister Cities Foundation formed in 1994 to coordinate and oversee all affiliations. For more information on the Las Cruces Sister Cities programs visit the web at www.lascrucescities.org; or contact Hale Huber at (575)650-6200.

As part of an International Program, the Las Cruces Sister Cities Program is involved with NMSU’s International and Border Programs “Las Cruces International Festival.” Free and open the public, the festival will be held on March 21st from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Las Cruces Convention Center. More information is available at NMSU International Student and Scholar Services office – (575)646-2017; and at http://ibp.nmsu.edu/2015-las-cruces-international-festival-scheduled/
