A university research project is helping some border residents get clean drinking water through filtration systems made out of supplies found at many hardware stores.
The project is led by a group of students and professors at the University of Texas at El Paso and New Mexico State University. They build filtering systems that can be made with supplies that cost anywhere from less than $50 and up to $300.
The goal is to help people living in border communities known as "colonias." These residents often lack water service. They pay to truck in water for washing and bathing, and buy bottled water for drinking.
The project is funded with a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
