Police: We're Fighting Cartels, Not Profiling

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) — San Juan County Sheriff Ken Christesen says federal immigration agents have been invited to the Four Corners area to help battle Mexican drug cartels, not to find illegal immigrants.

Christesen made the comments as an immigrant advocacy group was slated Wednesday to announce details of racial-profiling complaints against the sheriff's department and Farmington police over the agencies' use of immigrant agents.

Christesen says three cartels, including the deadly Sinaloa Cartel, are using San Juan County's rugged terrain and isolated roads to transport illegal drugs from safe houses to cities across the country.

Somos Un Pueblo Unido, a Santa Fe-based immigrant advocacy group, is scheduled to announce details of six bias complaints against Farmington police and the San Juan County Sheriff's Department.
