New Mexico Democrat Angelica Rubio Says NM House District 35 Win Was Symbolic Victory

Simon Thompson

Though the Democratic Party fell short nationally, they did well in New Mexico state races.

Angelica Rubio is under 40, Latina and now the New Mexico State House representative for district 35. Rubio beat Republican candidate Joseph Bishop.

Rubio explains the significance of her victory.

“I represent demographics that normally aren’t around in local and state and even national politics.” Rubio said “As a community organizer who believes in racial and economic equity I feel that my message has resonated with many people, not only in the district but across the state and the region.””

Though Rubio still has some concerns about how the election went nationally.

“As the daughter of Mexican immigrants and someone who identifies as Mexican we have been attacked personally by Donald Trump.” Rubio said “That is what makes this election night pretty bitter sweet.”
