Music by Dello Joio, Ticheli, Bernstein and Bach at next MVCB concert

Leora Zeitlin

Twentieth-century composer Norman Dello Joio bucked the atonal musical trends of his contemporaries to create lush, beautiful harmonies and melodies in his music. One of his pieces will be performed at this weekend’s concert of the Mesilla Valley Concert Band, a community ensemble made up of professional and high-level amateur musicians. The band’s conductor Dr. Bill Clark came to talk with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin about the music on the program by Dello Joio, Leonard Bernstein and Frank Ticheli, whose well-crafted and imaginative works have made him a rising star, particularly in the concert band world. “Our goal is to produce the highest quality music we can, at the highest possible level,” conductor Clark says of the MVCB. The concert is on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Atkinson Recital Hall.
