Jim Shearer and Mike Sizer bring Dixieland jazz to Las Cruces

Leora Zeitlin

Tuba jazzman Jim Shearer and Dixieland clarinetist Mike Sizer have been talking about playing a gig together for years, but it took until now for that  dream to come to fruition. The two, joined by the Second Line Survivors Band, will perform a pair of concerts, first in Carrizozo on Thursday and at the Rio Grande Theatre in Las Cruces on Friday. The instantly-recognizable style of music called Dixieland is a blend of ragtime, Sousa march music, and improvisational techniques that grew out of New Orleans street music. Shearer came to KRWG to talk with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin about the music, its history, and his friendship with Sizer, former clarinetist with the Dukes of Dixieland.
