hOur Time - A free exchange of services.

Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra meets with Coordinator for Doña Ana Communities United (DACU), Kari Bachman, who has been organizing hOur Time, a local Time Bank for labor or skill sharing services. There is nothing new about neighbors helping each other by sharing services or working without charge. This is one of the concepts of a Time Bank, an individual can provide one hour of service, for example an hour of gardening, and offers it in exchange for an hour of childcare or home repair. This helps meet the financial needs of individuals and communities.

Bachman says “there are many of these Time Banks around the world; they’ve been going for about twenty years now. Our time bank, hOur Time, is part of an international network of time banks. We all have access to free software, and when you join hOur Time you become a member, and you get access to that, you create a very simple profile online and then you post your offers, things you offer to help people with, and post the requests, the things you would like some help with.”

hOur Time membership is free. The only requirement is that you attend an orientation meeting and provide a minimum of two hours per year of service to the bank. The next monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, July 28th from 11 am to 1 pm at the Munson Center in Las Cruces. To find out more visit www.placematters.org, or contact Kari Bachman at 496-4330 or by email to kari@cfsnm.org.
