Ex-Comptroller: No Criminal Intent With Fake Audit

A former New Mexico Finance Authority comptroller at the center of a fake financial audit that could affect the state's overall credit rating says he had no criminal intent.

Greg Campbell told KOB-TV on Friday that he did put the audit together without full care and it was "probably" negligent on his part.

He said, instead, he should have had the auditor and management sign off on not only the numbers, but also on the format and everything else in the report. Campbell said officials mistook his "draft" report for the "final" report.

New Mexico's top security regulator said this week that potential fraud within a state financing authority extended beyond a faked audit that has national credit rating agencies considering whether to downgrade the agency's bond ratings.
