Czech Exhibit Planned For Deming Museum
Organizers in Deming are gathering photographs and items for a planned exhibit on the area's Czechoslovakian heritage.
The Deming Headlight reports that Barbara Mazac Jimerson is seeking family history and letters from the exhibit at the Deming-Luna-Mimbres Museum.
During the early 1900s a local real estate agent knew of a sizable population of Czech's who migrated to the west and settled in Texas. He started advertising land for sale in Luna County in New Mexico.
A number of Czech families responded to these ads and started to migrate to Deming from Texas, searching for rich soil for ranching and farming.
Organizers hope the exhibit will unearth the forgotten history of Czech migration to the region.
