KRWG-TV Launches A Spanish Language Network

Las Cruces, NM – Today, KRWG-TV joined a handful of Public Broadcasting Stations across the country in transmitting V-Me, a Spanish Language Digital Television Network. V-Me, which means see me in Spanish, will broadcast educational programs and public affairs reports directed towards Hispanic Communities. As KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, Lt. Gov. Diane Denish came to Las Cruces to launch the first broadcast.

New Battalion Heads To White Sands

Las Cruces, NM – The Senate Armed Services Committee has agreed to authorize money to support a new engineering battalion at White Sands Missile Range. As KRWG's Jessica Borchert reports, the $71 million will go to support a new battalion at the base.

Las Cruces, NM – Award winning documentary filmmaker Sandra Robbie came through Las Cruces recently to show her film, 'For All the Children'. The movie tells the story of Gonzalo Mendez, a Mexican American who challenged segregation in California's public schools in the 1940's.

Border City Governments Hold Historic Meeting

Las Cruces, NM – City Council members from the three border cities of El Paso, Texas, Sunland Park, New Mexico and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua convened during the first bi-national city council meeting between the two countries. As KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, the community leaders came together at International Monument One, where the three states intersect, to address concerns affecting the area.

City Council Approves Re-Zoning to Develop Land

Las Cruces, NM – Las Cruces City Council members yesterday voted in favor of re-zoning a development project on the East Mesa called Waterfalls Subdivision . Phelps Dodge Set to Demolish Smokestacks

Las Cruces, NM – Last week the metal mining-giant Phelps Dodge leveled an obsolete smokestack near Playas, just north of the United States/ Mexico border. The Smokestack was part of a Phelps Dodge copper smelter which closed five years ago. As KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, thanks to a recent ruling the company will now demolish two more smokestacks in Hurley, New Mexico.

"Run for the Wall" passes through Las Cruces

Las Cruces, NM – Run for the Wall' came through Las Cruces to promote healing among all war veterans and their families. The event was held to honor the memory of those missing in action, prisoners of war, and killed in action. Veterans and non-veterans showed up riding over two hundred motorcycles early Friday morning. They're on a cross-country tour which started in Los Angeles and will wrap up in Washington, D.C. on Memorial Day.

Remembering Fallen Peace Officers

Las Cruces, NM – New Mexicans gathered May 14 for the annual Peace Officers' Memorial Service at onate high school.

The names and faces of law enforcement officers, including border patrol agents and military personnel, who died in the line of duty were displayed on a big screen while family members and friends placed flowers on a wreath in their honor.

ASARCO Faces Strong Opposition to Renew Air-Quality Permit

Las Cruces, NM – El Paso's copper smelter ASARCO which was shut down eight years ago due to a slump in the mineral's market value want to renew its operations. It can't, however, until the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality renews its air-quality permit. The commission's executive director already recommended the permit be renewed for five years, but as KRWG's Marco Grajeda reports, ASARCO officials still have to face opposition from the surrounding community and some local governments.
